Is My Child Too Young For Our New Hot Tub?

As fun and as soothing as it is to soak in your new hot tub, there are safety precautions you should be taking - particularly if you have young children.

Infants and young children are particularly sensitive to very hot and very cold water. The CDC advises not to allow children under 5 years of age to use hot tubs at all. Exposing very young children to water temperatures above 100 degrees fahrenheit can cause them to experience any number of dangerous, overheating symptoms. Even adults can experience dehydration and overheating from excessive heat during hot tub use and are advised to keep cold water within reach during hot tub sessions.

If your kids are old enough to use your new hot tub, follow these safety guidelines:

  • Never allow children to access your new hot tub unsupervised
  • Always keep cold water within reach and stay hydrated
  • Don’t allow kids to dunk their heads below the water
  • Keep the temperature below 100 degrees fahrenheit
  • Limit hot tub session duration to a maximum of 20 minutes
  • Outfit your kids with life vests for added safety
  • Don’t allow your kids to play with the jets or with any other hot tub components that they could get stuck on
  • No jumping in, no roughhousing
  • Advise your children to be VERY careful exiting the hot tub - even if yours is equipped with non-slip steps.
  • When you are done using your hot tub secure and lock the cover and make sure all children are inside.
